Cars are easy to electrify directly, and while quicker to refuel, hydrogen ones are incredibly energy inefficient, says Nick Hedley.

Large South African corporates are pinning their hopes on a booming global market for hydrogen-powered cars and mining trucks. While their big announcements make for great PR and photo opportunities, it’s highly likely that it will all come to nothing.

In May last year, to much fanfare, Anglo American unveiled a prototype of the world’s biggest hydrogen-powered mine haul truck.
