Toyota is firmly committed to hydrogen cars and is actively developing a new generation of fuel cell powertrains that will outpace current technology in multiple aspects.

Toyota, Hyundai, and BMW— notably collaborating with Toyota on hydrogen vehicles— are leading the charge in envisioning a future where hydrogen takes center stage in the automotive industry. While opinions on the viability of hydrogen as a solution to our automotive challenges vary, Toyota is resolutely committed to advancing this technology. In 2026, the company will launch its groundbreaking third generation of hydrogen powertrains, and it is now sharing crucial details about this exciting development.

According to Toyota, it wants to use its third-generation FC System not only in passenger cars but also in heavy commercial vehicles. From trucks to excavators and from ships to trains. The hardware must be cheaper to produce and must have a lifespan comparable to a traditional diesel engine. But there is more. The new fuel cell drivetrains must be 20 percent more efficient than the current generation due to various unexplained improvements. In theory, this gives the electrically powered vehicles a range of up to 20 percent greater than at present. According to the Japanese, the aforementioned cost savings are possible, among other things, through ‘innovations in cell design’ and in the production process.
